As we noted in a recent Climatech article, up to half of the typical energy bill in our service area of Mooresville, Davidson, Cornelius, Huntersville, and Denver is spent on heating and cooling our homes. So, regardless of the type of HVAC equipment you have in your home, proper maintenance and operation of your furnace or air conditioner will help them last longer and possible prevent expensive heating and cooling repairs.

This is particularly true when you take a holistic approach. When you combine HVAC equipment upgrades and maintenance with things like insulation, weatherization and wise use of your thermostat, you could potentially save up to half on your energy bills!

So Climatech would like to pass on some more common sense tips to help you operate your electric or gas furnace, heat pump or air conditioner to help you save money on your energy bills and be more comfortable in your home.

Climatech General Home Heating Tips

What’s your personal temperature comfort zone? How low can you set the thermostat and still be comfortable? Figuring this out will save you money on your energy bills!

Inspect your furnace air filter every month. If it’s dirty, replace it! Furnace filters tend to get dirty faster in the heavy-use winter and summer months.
Make sure the heating and cooling registers are not being blocked by furniture or rugs. This will force your furnace work harder and consume more gas and energy.

Those exhaust fans in your kitchen and bath? They not only pull away smoke and odors they suck out heat, too! As soon as you have aired your kitchen or bath, turn off the fan!

Catch some rays: open your drapes and shades on the southern side of your home during daylight hours to let in the sun. Give your furnace and your energy bills – a break!

That room in the back of the house that you never go into? Close the registers in that room as long as it doesn’t negatively affect the temperature in the rest of your home.

Climatech General Home Cooling Tips

Just as we said with heating, you should experiment with the temperature in your home, and try to determine the warmest temperature that you can set your air conditioner and still be comfortable. This is a prime way to save on your energy bills!

If you’ve been away for a while with the air conditioner off, you don’t have to crank it up for a while to catch up. It really doesn’t help cool your home any faster, and it wastes money on your energy bills.

While we’re on the subject of being away, consider a programmable thermostat. It will save money on your energy bills by not running constantly when you aren’t home.

In dry weather, set your central air fan to high speed. In humid weather, set your central air fan to low speed. The heavier more humid air will actually seem for comfortable at low speed.

Well-placed ceiling fans will efficiently distribute the cool air and draw away the warm and save money on your energy bills!

Any kind of heat source – like a TV, lamps or appliances – placed near your thermostat will distort the temperature reading and negatively affect your comfort.

Climatech clients in the Denver NC / Lake Norman area know that the best way to prevent untimely heating and cooling problems and unexpected costs is to properly and professionally maintain their home’s HVAC equipment.

You can help make sure your <a href=""http://climatechnc.com">heating and cooling systems are running at optimum performance by having your Climatech technician perform pre-season check-ups every year. Pre-season check-ups are important because Climatech, like every HVAC contractor, gets very busy when summer or winter arrive. So it’s best to schedule a cooling system check in the spring, and a heating system check in the fall. It might help to schedule these HVAC check-ups just like how you switch out the batteries in your smoke detectors around the time you change your clocks.

The standard Climatech heating and cooling maintenance check-up includes the following steps:

Your Climatech technician will check your thermostat settings to make sure your HVAC system keeps your home at a comfortable temperature while you are in it, but also saves energy while you are out.

Worn or faulty electrical connections can cause unsafe operation and shorten the lifespan of your HVAC system. So Climatech will make sure your electrical connections are tight and secure. Then we take measurements of the current and voltage in your system’s motors to make sure they are within manufacturer specifications.

Friction between moving parts in your HVAC system’s motor slows the system down and increases your energy usage. This raises your electric bill! So your Climatech technician will lubricate the moving parts in your heating and cooling system.

Clogged condenser drains can lead to water damage in your house, as well as make your home seem more humid. So your Climatech technician will inspect the condensate drain in your furnace, air conditioner or heat pump to make sure there are no blockages.

Climatech will also check your HVAC system’s controls to make sure they are starting, operating and shutting off safely and efficiently.

Climatech Cooling System Maintenance

Dirty coils in your air conditioner evaporator or condenser can reduce your system’s ability to cool your home, and it can cause your system to run longer. This can raise your electric bill, and reduce the lifespan of your AC system. So your Climatech technician will inspect the evaporator coil and condenser coils in your air conditioner.

Refrigerant: when you have too much or not enough refrigerant, your air conditioner runs less efficiently, which can reduce the life of your cooling system and raise your energy bills. So your Climatech technician will check the refrigerant level in your central air and adjust it if necessary.
Inefficient or blocked airflow can really reduce the efficiency of your cooling system. Climatech will inspect, clean and adjust the components of your AC system’s blower for greater efficiency and comfort.

Climatech Heating System Maintenance

When your burners are dirty, or your heat exchanger is cracked, they can cause your burners to operate inefficiently and less safely. Carbon monoxide can leak from the heat exchanger and mix with the air that is distributed through out your home. Also, if your gas or oil connections are not properly maintained, it can cause a fire hazard or even health issues. So your Climatech technician will check burners, heat exchangers, gas or oil connections and pressure.

Climatech Professional HVAC Maintenance for Peace of Mind

Maintaining your home’s HVAC system is a matter of dollars and sense. It can also be a matter of your health as well. So Climatech urges you to have regular, seasonal inspections of your heating and cooling system performed by experienced HVAC specialists. In the Denver NC / Lake Norman area, the name to know is Climatech.

In a typical home in the Denver NC / Lake Norman area, energy use splits up many ways including lighting, TVs, and appliances. Did you know that up to half of the energy you use goes toward heating and cooling? We at want to help you make wise choices about your home’s system and help improve your bills and make you more comfortable in your home, year-round!

Commonsense Steps for Home Energy Efficiency

There are several common sense things that you or your technician can do to help make your heating and cooling system more efficient.

Change your filter at regular intervals

Have perform a yearly tune-up on your system

Have install a modern thermostat

Properly seal the and ducts in your home

Consider allowing to install STAR-qualified equipment

Changing your air filter

There is some debate as to how often to change your air filter. Every month? Two? Three? says you should CHECK your filter once a month, particularly in the heavy-use winter and summer months. Is your filter dirty? Then change it. If it’s not too bad, you can probably wait. It’s really about your individual and cooling usage, but three months is usually the limit. Climatech also has high efficiency filters available that perform much better than over the counter filters and only require changing once a year. Why is important to have clean filters? Because dirty air filters slow down the airflow in your home. Your system has to work harder, and less efficiently. The result is that you’re paying more money for less comfort!

Have Climatech Perform a Yearly Tune-up on Your HVAC System

When a heating and cooling system in installed correctly it is operating at its peak performance, however the effects of time, friction, heat and dirt buildup can drop the efficiency of the equipment dramatically. Cleaning your HVAC system and giving it a performance tune up makes great economic sense. You will save money on your utility bills and prolong the life of the equipment. Compare it to the maintenance of your car. Would you consider driving your car for 100,000 miles without and oil change or a tune up? Call today to have perform an annual tune-up on your homes , cooling and ventilation () system.

Have Climatech Install a Modern Programmable Thermostat

The thermostat has been a real advancement in home efficiency. If nobody is at home during the day, program the thermostat to heat or cool your home less. About a half hour before you get home, tell it to get back to work. And a mable thermostat is great for that week long vacation. Some estimates say that a thermostat can save you up to $180 each year in energy bills!

Seal the Heating and Cooling Ducts in Your Home

Your and cooling ducts can be a big energy drain. You should consider having them sealed by a Climatech technician to eliminate leaks. Did you know that duct leaks will actually pull air out of your 140 degree attic in the summer time or out of a damp crawl space and mix it with the air in your home that you are trying to condition. It makes your HVAC work much harder and pollutes the indoor air with attic and crawl space air. Sealing your heating and cooling ducts can potentially improve your home system’s efficiency by up to 20% or more.

Consider Having Climatech Install ENERGY STAR-qualified HVAC Equipment

How old is your , ventilation and cooling (HVAC) equipment? Older than 10 years? If so, you should have a professional like evaluate it. Our staff is trained to select the proper size system for your home by using a heat load calculation program based on our temperature and humidity in the Mooresville, Davidson, Cornelius, Huntersville, and Denver areas. We will help you select the system that best meets your needs.

It’s not Just the Equipment, But Also the Service!

New equipment is a big step toward energy efficiency. That new or cooling equipment should be properly and professionally installed. Climatech knows that professionally installed equipment will last longer, provide better overall performance and lead to up to 30% better efficiency! What’s more, we have the and cooling experience to tell you when a few commonsense steps like the ones listed above can help you gain energy efficiency. Our trained staff and service technicians provide the excellent service that you expect and deserve. Please contact us today to learn more.

There are lots of ways homeowners in the Denver NC/Lake Norman area can take control of their home heating and cooling energy management. One of the best ways is to buy the residential HVAC system that is the correct size for your house. If your HVAC system is too small, it must work too hard (while the meter is running!) and you will likely never be truly comfortable, either too hot or too cold. Buy too much system, and you pay up front for excess heating or cooling capacity you will never use.

Because buying the correct HVAC system is so important, because it is a significant investment, and because there are many factors to consider, it can be an intimidating process. Climatech Heating and Cooling would like to make the decision a little easier for you.

Efficient Residential HVAC Equipment Saves Energy and Money

According to the Alliance to Save Energy, the average American household will pay $2,300 this year on energy costs, with heating alone accounting for almost 45 percent of that total.Climatech Heating and Cooling offers products and systems from well-known, reputable HVAC suppliers like Trane, Lennox and others. Climatech can install a portfolio of high-performing and high-quality residential HVAC systems that will not only help you save on your monthly utility bills, but also save energy and help the environment.

According to the Alliance to Save Energy, the average American household will pay $2,300 this year on energy costs, with heating alone accounting for almost 45 percent of that total.

Climatech Heating and Cooling offers products and systems from well-known, reputable HVAC suppliers like Trane, Lennox and others. Climatech can install a portfolio of high-performing and high-quality residential HVAC systems that will not only help you save on your monthly utility bills, but also save energy and help the environment.

The ENERGY STAR Qualified systems Climatech offers include:

Highly efficient gas furnaces that have earned up to a 95% Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency rating almost 20% higher than the government minimum standard. You can use up to 40% less energy when you install an efficient furnace.

Highly efficient air conditioners with a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) of up to 20.00 significantly higher than the minimum 13 efficiency of 13 allowed by Energy Department. If you were to replace a 10 year old AC system with a new one with 20 SEER rating, you could save up tp 60% on your yearly energy bill.

Preventative Maintenance is the Key to a Healthy HVAC System

Climatech Heating and Cooling offers homeowners in the Denver NC/Lake Norman area comprehensive preventative maintenance service for residential HVAC systems. Prior to the summer cooling and winter heating seasons begin, we will make sure your system is in good working order. We can also perform system tune-ups annually for oil-fired systems, every two years for gas, and every three years for heat pumps. This will help extend the life of your system, increase energy efficiency, cause less pollution and save you money.

A clean furnace filter will allow better airflow and help decrease your energy use. A clean, well-lubricated and properly adjusted furnace may save you about 5% on your heating costs. If you would like to increase the energy efficiency of your furnace, clean or replace your filters once a month during operating seasons.

A Programmable Thermostat Provides Efficiency and Comfort

A programmable thermostat is made to optimize the performance of your HVAC system by providing accurate and reliable temperature control. A programmable thermostat may save you about $100 a year, and could actually pay for itself in two years or less.

Energy Efficiency is more than a Rating

Climatech Heating and Cooling knows that not all square footage is created equally. The SEER efficiency rating given to an HVAC system may say one thing in the factory, but when it is installed in the home, it can be much lower. If your system has insufficient airflow (up to 70% don’t), insufficient refrigerant (up to 74% don’t), mismatched coils or leaky ducts, it could really put a dent in your energy efficiency, increase system wear and tear, and shorten system life. This is why professional consultation and installation is so important when choosing an HVAC system and supplier.

If you live in the DenverNC/Lake Norman area, and would like to learn more about maximizing your home’s energy efficiency, please contact Climatech Heating and Cooling today!
